Hoi
An - An UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Established in the
15th century, the ancient town of Hoi An was one of the most important
trading ports in Southeast Asia and an important centre of East-West cultural
exchange. It is located 30 km south of Danang on an estuary of the Thu
Bon River, the longest river in the province. Previously called Faifo,
Hoi An has been shaped by many foreign influences over the centuries.
Thankfully its ancient past is superbly preserved in a fascinating collection
of temples, pagodas, shop houses and architecturally magnificent private
homes which make up the town's old quarter. One of the town's landmarks
is the bright red Japanese Bridge, a wooden structure originally built
in 1593. Not far from the Museum of History and Culture is the Central
